We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner place behind the curtain, where Jesus has gone as a forerunner on our behalf, having become a high priest forever after the order of Melchizedek. (Heb 6:19-20)
I love the way this passage puts the idea of ‘hope’ together with the concept of an ‘anchor’. It’s weird, because they are opposites – for me hope has always seemed tenuous like “I hope that comes true” – but I really don’t know whether God even wants it to, in my life. Yet even the faintest hope is infinitely better than despair – so, even that tiniest glimmer of light is enough, sometimes to keep us going.
And then anchors – wow, an anchor is like a mother hugging a baby until it stops crying and can go to sleep in her arms.
Ok so what if you put both concepts together? Wow, then you get the most incredible thing, don’t you – something with all the power of the faintest hope, which is infinitely better than the pit of despair, plus, something absolutely firm and rock-bottom trustworthy.
