When we were in Yellowstone last summer we walked to a petrified forest in an area north of the park. Someone advised us to go to that one rather than the one in the park because he said a) you can get permits to take a piece home from the one outside the park, b) the one inside the park involves a strenuous walk unsuitable for young children and c) he’d never seen any petrified trees in the one in the park.
I was happy to do the other walk but I did remember seeing at least one petrified tree when we walked to the one in the park 13 years earlier. Here’s the photographic evidence 🙂 (click on the photo for a bigger version)
